Marketing in the Agentic Era (2026): From Selling to Humans to Influencing AI Systems

Marketing as we know it runs on a premise that is becoming obsolete: that behind every click, every search and every purchase there is a direct human decision. For decades, we have perfected the art of influencing that decision. But in 2026, a new actor enters the scene, one that does not respond to cognitive biases or emotional urgency: the artificial intelligence agent.

We are entering the agentic era. A time when consumers increasingly delegate tasks, from planning a trip to the weekly grocery run, to AI systems that act on their behalf. This is not a distant prediction. It is a transition already underway. Marketing stops being B2C (Business-to-Consumer) and becomes B2A (Business-to-Agent). And in this new scenario, the rules do not change. They are rewritten entirely.

What Is the Agentic Era and Why Does It Redefine Marketing?

The agentic era is defined by artificial intelligence intermediating consumer decisions. Your next customer will not search Google for "the best flights to Cancun". They will tell their personal agent: "Book me the most cost-effective trip to Cancun for the first week of July, optimizing for fewer layovers and hotels rated above 4.5 in sustainability".

The agent does not "browse" the web. It queries APIs, analyzes structured data from thousands of providers, compares prices in real time, reads verified reviews and executes the purchase. No clicks, no display ads, no retargeting.

A Forrester analysis from late 2025 already projected that by 2028, 30% of consumer purchases and 45% of B2B acquisitions will be initiated or completed by AI agents. That represents a collapse of the traditional conversion funnel.

The End of the Traditional Funnel: When Your Customer Is an Algorithm

Modern marketing was built on a funnel model: capture attention, generate interest, nurture desire and trigger action. Every stage was designed for human psychology.

In the agentic era, this model becomes irrelevant for three reasons:

  • Attention is no longer the currency: An AI agent does not get "distracted" by a flashy ad. Its attention is infinite and purely functional. It looks for data, not stimuli.
  • Lead nurturing gets automated: The consideration process no longer happens in a sequence of emails. It happens in milliseconds, inside a language model that evaluates specifications, prices, inventory and reputation.
  • The decision is logical, not emotional: Brand loyalty, packaging design and persuasive copy lose their power. The agent optimizes for the parameters its user defined. If your product is not logically the best option, it will not be chosen.

Isolated marketing actions (a social campaign, a blog article, a Google ad) become noise. The new imperative is not to create campaigns. It is to build a machine-readable brand system.

From B2C to B2A: The New Success Metrics

In B2A marketing, vanity metrics like likes, reach or even web traffic lose meaning. The new key performance indicators (KPIs) measure how efficiently your brand communicates with algorithmic systems.

  • Agent Selection Rate (ASR): What percentage of the time do agents choose your product when it is a relevant option?
  • Data Clarity Score: How complete, accurate and well structured is the data about your products and services?
  • Verified Trust Index (VTI): A metric composed of reviews, certifications and mentions from authoritative sources.
  • API Efficiency: The speed and reliability with which your system delivers data to the agents that request it.

Measuring this is impossible if your marketing keeps operating in silos. You need a centralized system where the brand's identity, its narrative and its operation are connected.

The 3 Pillars of Marketing for AI Agents

For your brand to be chosen by an AI agent, it must excel in three fundamental areas. These are not marketing channels. They are systemic capabilities.

  • Structured Data: AI does not interpret, it reads data. Your product needs a "digital passport": technical specifications, prices, availability, compatibility, certifications. All in a standardized, accessible format.
  • Verifiable Reputation: Trust is no longer built with branding but with proof. Customer reviews, mentions in authoritative publications, quality seals, historical performance data. An agent will look for external validation, not marketing promises.
  • Direct Access: Friction is the enemy. If an agent has to "scrape" your website to get information, it will discard you. You need APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) that let external systems query your inventory, prices and capabilities directly and efficiently.

How to Prepare Your Brand for the Agentic Era: 4 Systemic Steps

Adapting to this new paradigm is not about buying a new tool or launching an "innovative" campaign. It is about installing a new operating capability at the core of your business.

Step 1: Centralize and structure product data (Product Information Management)

The first step is to treat your product information as a strategic asset. That means creating a single source of truth (a PIM system) where every attribute of every product is carefully documented and standardized. Think of it as the DNA of your offer, ready to be read by any system.

Step 2: Build a verifiable reputation system

Audit and systematize your trust signals. Encourage detailed reviews, pursue relevant industry certifications and produce case studies with quantifiable data. Your goal is to create a trail of digital evidence that shows, beyond doubt, that your product delivers what it promises.

Step 3: Install a GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) operation

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the new SEO. It is not only about keywords, but about optimizing your content to be the primary source of AI answers. That means:

  • Creating "answer capsules" with concise information.
  • Using structured data (Schema) to label every piece of information on your website.
  • Focusing on topical authority and citing reliable sources.

Step 4: Develop an agentic "Handshake" via APIs

Start thinking of your business as a platform. How can an external system interact with your company? Develop secure, well-documented APIs for inventory queries, pricing and product configuration. This positions you as a preferred provider in the agentic economy.

2027 Predictions: The Agentic Marketing Landscape

Looking ahead, the consolidation of the agentic era will bring even deeper changes:

  • The birth of "Agent Marketers": Specialized roles will emerge to optimize a brand's presence across the main agent ecosystems (Google, Apple, Amazon).
  • Consolidation of "Data Marketplaces": Companies with the cleanest, most complete product data will be able to monetize it, selling access to agent developers.
  • The decline of interruption advertising: As agents take on more decisions, interruption-based advertising will lose almost all of its effectiveness. Investment will shift toward data and reputation infrastructure.

Conclusion: Marketing Does Not Die, It Becomes a System

The agentic era is not the end of marketing. It is the end of marketing as a series of fragmented, intuition-based actions. The chaos of scattered campaigns, uncertain ROI and dependence on human persuasion becomes unsustainable.

Success will no longer depend on the creativity of your next ad campaign, but on the coherence and robustness of the system that feeds the algorithms making decisions. The brands that thrive will be the ones that stop shouting at humans and start speaking, with precision and clarity, the language of machines. It is not optional. It is the new logic of growth.
